5th of May - Santa Maria to Hidroelectrica + Hiking to Pueblo Machu Picchu

« Back to journal
The next day we made slowly our way up to Santa Theresa. Also some kind of "death road". One can find also some crosses here.

Single lane and luckily we "met" only 4 cars/ trucks

Later the valley opens up

Actually "La montana Machu Picchu", 3.082m. We didn't know at that time that we would would stand on top of this mountain the next day.

Nice hairstyle :-)

We left the motorbike at Senor Escobar (no, not a relative of the famous Columbian:-) who owns a shack just across the river before one passes the registration office.
For 10 Soles a day he takes care of your stuff. At the registration office you just leave your name. One passes the Hidroelectrica Train Station which is the last reachable point for vehicles of any kind and follows approx. 12 km the railway track to Pueblo Machu Picchu. It is a nice hike in the beautiful landscape of the surrounding mountains and right thru the jungle.

Yes, jungle. The area of Machu Picchu feeds as well the Amazon basin.

Aha, first sights of the Inka ruins. The Spanish didn't find Machu Picchu which is the reason for its preservation.

Also plants are subject to gravitation

Fake. We didn't take the train.

Bananas hanging in the doorway of the church...mix of western and indigenous religion

Pueblo Machu Picchu, former Agua Calientes, planted into the narrow valley. And they are still building hotels and and and...Up to 3.000 sold entrance tickets per day (the current limitation) creating bigger fantasies...
