4th of May – On the way to Machu Picchu - approx. 260km 8h

« Back to journal

From Cusco we drove north via Pisac towards Ollantaytambo in the river valley of the mighty Urubamba.

In Ollantaytambo we made a stop for lunch. In the back Inka terraces.

And guess what...we had to climb again a pass of 4.400 in order to reach the next valley from which we could have reached Santa Theresa and Hidroelectrica, the "backdoor" to Machu Picchu.
On the pass rain, drizzle, fog, coldness as usual

On approx. 3.600m we were able to see something again

Glaciers

But that day we were not able to reach Santa Theresa. To time consuming these endless passes and curves but of course a dream for motorbikers.
We stopped in Santa Maria, the last village reachable on the paved road and found a hostal which was packed with "adventure jungle tourists" as we found out later.
They were on one of the group tours from Cusco: bus transfer from Cusco to the pass, hop on the mountain bike + downhill to Santa Maria, hop on the raft and down the river, back to the hostal, next day hike to Santa Theresa, zip line the river, next day hike to Agua Calientes (now called Pueblo Machu Picchu), next Day Machu Picchu + return by train in the night to Cusco. All for 280 USD per person.
Na, wenn das kein Sonderangebot ist?! :-)
But everything what has to do with Machu Picchu is expensive. If one goes on a normal group package by train one spends also at least 240 USD incl. one overnight stay in Aguas Calientes.
