3rd of Feb - Big jump via Torres del Paine to Tres Lagos, Argentina - 514km, 12h
« Back to journal
Early in the morning we left our Mary Bed & Breakfast (actually without breakfast :-) But we had our "own" house for 3 days. We were in the neighbor building and we had luck that nobody else stayed there. Funny, in all cupboards we found the belongings of the people who lived here before. Not the first time. It seems to be a habit of the Chileans and Argentinians to leave all their stuff in the rooms or houses they rent to guests)
We made it before 10am to the road contruction area and could pass. The park entrance fee per person: 25 Euro for foreigners. Wow.
Views on the Cuernos del Paine
Glacier Grey from far away. To get closer views one have to take a boat and/ or hike there. After 4 weeks of freezing we were not in the mode to do the trekking; 5 - 7 days it takes for the "W" or to go round the whole massif.
But our "Touritour" with the motorbike was also very nice
The Torres del Paine hiding in the mist
Not easy to get one of the condors on a picture. Majestic. We saw also lots of Guanacos and Nandus in the more remote part of the park.
Later we decided to cross the border to Argentina in order to push further North into hopefully warmer parts of this earth. There is no road up on the Chilean side due to the continental ice mass in this area. We had already 160km gravel road on the clock and we didn't thought of going that much further...but on the paved road with another 90km gravel stretch in between all went smooth and we passed later El Clafate, El Chalten and made it up to Tres Lagos, another 354 km.
One have to set priorities. Just before 8 pm we made it to the gas station in Tres Lagos and fueled up. Rest of Argentinian money in our pocket: 87 pesos. En Tres Lagos no hay una banca.
Maybe a hotel would change some US$ or Euro? But there is no hotel. We asked around and ended up on a small campground for 80 pesos! :-) Lucky we. Later some other guests joined, a couple from Germany hitchhiking thru South America and an American family.
