27th of June - Mindo to Quito and flat tire on the road
« Back to journal
The power came back at around 4am.
In the morning at breakfast we discovered that our hostal was full of new arrivals. The day before we were the only guests.
Reason enough to leave Mindo we thought.
After 25km on the road we saw all of a sudden Dana and Felix leaving a gas station beside the road. Funny, we thought they would stay another day in Mindo?? We stopped and they told us that they had a really bad night, despite our lent headlamp. They had no key for their Cabana and had to sleep in another Cabana which was luckily open. Banging on the owners door didn’t help, nobody attended. In the morning they decided to leave.
After exchanging the news we left the gas station together but after 150m I felt the back of my motorbike sliding. Luckily I brought my moto to a halt without falling. The back tire was completely flat. Ying hopped on the back of Felix’ moto and I tried to drive the 150m back uphill. Not easy! Behind the gas station we found a “Vulcanization”.
But they just shook their heads when they saw the ripped off valve. We tried to fit Felix 17” tube on my 18” wheel rim but when we mounted the tire we damaged the tube. Sh___. The vulcanization guy saw our hassle and showed a valve which was cut out of another tube. He fixed both tubes and Dana and Felix got on their way.
After we mounted everything we left as well. Only 2.5 hours were gone but somehow the day was over mentally. At the Equator crossing we saw Dana and Felix’ motorbikes and we decided for a stop to eat something. Spending 3 USD each for the “Mitad del Mundo” didn’t came into my mind…paying for the Equator crossing?! Ok, there is a museo as well but….?
Felix was worried about his battery so we all went together to Quito which was originally not our target. We found KTM (without knowing that I would be back 2 days later) bought the battery and found afterwards Gerd’s hostal Zentrum which is run German only :-) Everything is in German as well his marketing…and it works.
The "official" Equator crossing...to fancy acc. to my taste
Another job idea: Maybe I can write a South America KTM guide...:-)
Quito impressions
Hare, Hare, Hare - Krishna...also here
The police presence in Quito by night is overwhelming and in our eyes just a big show. After sitting 1 hour only in a bar we saw who were the dealers and how they work. If the Police would want to crack down on them they could do. Our opinion.
