25th of December – Mendoza to Malargüe – 340 km and 8:20 hours

« Back to journal
We fled from the heat of Mendoza in the early morning. We left a deserted Mendoza.

We were on a great highway until I saw three breaded motorbikers standing in the shadow of some trees. I didn't think much about it when I saw a sign to Malargüe to the right, right into the desert. Our first experience on la routa cuarenta, the Route 40 to the south, which we will travel for roughly 3.700km. The 160km on gravel took us 4 hours. Well, there was not only gravel. Also some bone breaking corrugation, some sand...

In the evening we found a (dirty) backpacker hostel with a dorm. Hmm...

The next morning we had an early start: At 8:06am we started already  into the desert, once again. The heat was on again and the 554km from Malargüe to Zapala required 9:30 hours. This time we took a hotel even though it is expensive in Argentina. Rooms are basically rubish for 45 Euro a night.
