The Death Road I described in the journal of the 20th of April

This time we passed La Paz over Pereferique and Alto La Paz which saved us at least 2 hours but it was still horrible. Everywhere these minivans for public transportation chaotically stopping... reminded me of Indonesia.

Later we passed Titicaca lake on a height of 3.800m and climbed a pass of over 4.400 m to get down on the other side to Sorata on only 2.850m…theses passes are always demanding. On a height of approx. 3.800 always fog, drizzle and rain and coldness starts. In every curve one thinks "now it cannot go higher" but it surely does.

The Illampu with nearly 6.500m height in the background

The Titicaca lake in the background. Everywhere people busy on their fields in order to get their crop in. Here on a still "lovely" height of 3.900m.

Top view of the mountain village Sorata. We went for some trekking even though our hostal was sooo bad that basically we didn't want to stay for a night longer

And again Eucalyptus. Amazing how much Eucalyptus grows in South America..and huge trees; but no Koala :-)

adventure tours...:-)

And again on approx. 3.700m the fog rushes in. No way to see the Illampu...but we enjoyed the beautiful landscape and vegetation anyway

Nature pop art

We heard already from the mountain that a celebration started on the main square

Celebrating the saint of____, I forget the woman's name. Wow, with fireworks loud likes bombs

The last rocket just went up and the crowd starts to move still in the fumes

The music is always a bit strange for our ears. (Loud) Marching music, but with an Indian rhythm, "schräg" , purely instrumental and always repeating the same. But good, this rhythm goes into your blood.

The next band preparing. You can see how many people..Big sound.

Enjoying the show.

And the party for the saint continoued. In bed we discovered that at 3am it was still ongoing. And at 4am our duena celebrated with her friends in front of a karaoke box...horrible night. At 6am the marching music started again. Amazing.
At 8am we were on the road again.
