14th of Feb - La Junta to Chaiten – 147km 4h45

Awful road construction work for about 100km. A lot of dust eating from all the construction works but also from the cars which drove towards us or from cars and trucks we had to take over.

In one case one pickup came with high speed towards us and passed by very close. All of a sudden I couldn’t see anything. NOTHING, just blind. I did not even know if another car was behind this one. I braked hard and because I was so afraid that maybe another car followed I drifted too much to the right side on the shoulder of the gravel with BIG stones…one of these hit my boot hard and with the back of my boot I hit the back brake pedal and deformed it totally. But luck that there was no other car in the dust from whatever direction and I didn’t break my angle!

We were just glad when we had asphalt again 45km before Chaiten. Achja, the right mirror just broke away from all the vibration of the Ripio, wow. So, some mechanical repairs waiting ahead on Chiloe, a big island south of Puerto Montt. Still lucky we even got a ticket for the ferry tomorrow to Castro on Chiloe.

Still smiling in the beginning of the road construction...later naja :-)

Mirror gone, brake pedal deformed but happy to be on asphalt again

The micro version of the Golden Gate Bridge

The volcanic eruption in 2008 covered Chaiten completely under mud about a meter high. The cleanup is still ongoing.

Funny fitness program with sea view

An evening on the beach

The next day the heat is on. Banging my head while waiting for bording the ferry. We and another motorbiker were the last ones...:-)
