Olgiy to Hovd - 245km
The next day I went with my bike into the mountains close to Olgiy.
Up there I tested my cooker when a herd of sheep, goats, horses and yaks passed by driven down the valley by 2 shepherds. The sky went dark and I decided to return to my hotel when I saw 2 motor bikers at the filling station: Roberto and Matteo from Italy. While we chatted there 5 min later Florian from Austria arrived at the same place: Unbelievable!!
The next morning the Italians left very early and Florian and I decided to go together the next day to Hovd and continue then to Ulaan Baatar.
A wise decision because the next day we had to pull Florian’s bike out of a river which we had to cross on a height of 2600m. Wet hands and feet and freezing cold we drove through this “lake district” on a high plateau. Actually here the first time the GPS failed and showed us different track out of this area.
We didn’t take it that serious because another 15km later the GPS data fit again to the track.
For this 245km we needed the whole day - confirming my estimation that we would need much more time covering distances in Mongolia.
But in the end we reached our Grand Hotel in Hovd :-)
The landscapes and light shows are amazing in this country, please see the pictures.
while testing my cooker I saw my first yak
view on Olgiy
...and suddenly we were four! Roberto and Matteo from Italy were at the filling station when I
passed by. While we chatted, Florian from Austria arrived as well. Unbelievable. The Italiens
were in a hurry and left very early the next morning. Florian and myself started the day after
towards Hovd.
the main square in Olgiy
"dramatic" scenes on the way to Hovd
wild horses
a piece of green always touches the soul in this part of Mongolia
my new co-rider :-) Florian
snow in the mountains...but we were here above 2650m
in this terrain we had later a river crossing and we had to pull out Florian's bike. Rainfall and
coldness...wet hands and feet
after the rain up there it got warmer again on a level of 2000m
Ger camps
the vastness is breathtaking
the first inspections of the wheel rim...there follwed many more...meanwhile the rim looks
like a square:-)) and it still holds
a first sight of Hovd
besides the local market sales out of containers
Our Grand Hotel in Hovd :-))
